Wednesday Intermediate Wheelthrowing: Focus on Mugs & Cups: Fall 2019

Instructor: Bethany Rusen

Wednesdays Evenings, September 25 - November 13, 2019, 8 weeks, 6 - 9 pm.

In this intermediate class, we will focus on drinking vessels - mugs, cups, tankards, steins and everything in between. By concentrating on this one ubiquitious form, we’ll ask ourselves: what makes a cup or mug functional? What attributes makes it a pleasure to drink from?

We will cover a variety of skills, starting with a concentration on form and shape and how to go beyond the circle. We will demonstrate how to make a variety of handles and other additions as well as explorations of surface decoration, from carving and sgraffito to glaze and oxide testing to further develop our understanding and knowledge of Black Hound’s glaze palette. We will also delve into ancient and contemporary ceramics through internet research and hands on experiences with drinking vessels.

Please note that to participate in this intermediate class, you must have experience throwing on potter’s wheel (either at Black Hound or elsewhere) with a general understanding of how to throw a basic cylinder, as well as trimming and then glazing.

All instruction, glazes and firing are included in the price of the class. Clay can be purchased separately at the studio ($25 for 25 pounds) as well as a beginner tool kit ($10) and paid for online at our supply store. Students are also required to bring an old towel for clean up. A more detailed orientation email listing materials to bring will be sent prior to the start of class.
